DISASTER MANAGEMENT UNIT

 

 

The Disaster Management Unit of the Instituto Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral, Inc. (IDDI) is the division that coordinates the actions of the institution for Disaster Management.
Basically the responsibility of the UGR-IDDI is to coordinate and support actions for risk management, emergency management, disaster management and humanitarian aid.
This unit is in disposition, to establish links with all public and private institutions in order to join efforts for reducing the vulnerability of communities at risk, and to channel humanitarian aid in disasters.

Vision and Objective
• Contribute to strengthening the capacities of public institutions, civil society organizations and communities in vulnerable conditions in the city of Santo Domingo and other communities in different regions of the Dominican Republic, on Risk Management, Emergency Management and Disaster Management.
• The ultimate objective of the Unit is to contribute to an efficient and timely response to populations affected by emergencies and disasters by coordinating efforts between government agencies and civil society in various regions of the country.
• In general, the UGR is contributing through a methodology that has been tested.

Action Protocols
IDDI’s Disaster Management Unit is not intended to replace or compete with the relief agencies of the Dominican Republic, but to coordinate with them and other civil society organizations to take action in time and with quality.

Achievements
• Recognized by the system’s institutions: municipalities, Red Cross, Civil Defense, Police, among others.
• Recognized by institutions for cooperation and other national NGOs.
• The implementation of three actions plans DIPECHO V, VI and VII.
• Humanitarian assistance in various emergencies: Tropical Storm Olga and Noel, Hurricane Gustav, Haiti earthquake.
• Formation of community committees for prevention, mitigation and response in the neighborhoods of the National District (Santo Domingo great) and Santo Domingo East.
• Training of 300 volunteer facilitators in Disaster management.
• Participation in national and international events on exchange of experiences.
• The publication of educational materials for training of communities.
