COMMUNITY COMPREHENSIVE DEVELOPMENT AND
PARTICIPATION Program IN PLAYA OESTE AND EL
JAVILLAR NEIGHBORHOODS, SAN FELIPE
MUNICIPALITY, PUERTO PLATA
The goal of the program, supported by San
Felipe Generator Company, one of the
country’s electricity generation companies,
is to contribute with the improvement of
life quality of underpriviledged people
living in the target areas. To achieve the
results, we carry out activities involving
the health sector, social mobilization and
environmental clean-up, with the direct
participation of the communities. |
The components of the program are:
The health component created a voluntary
network of social and youth promoters that
spread the knowledges adquired concerning
sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS
prevention in the community.
The environmental clean-up component
includes drinking water systems, sewage and
rain water treatment and the creation of a
community enterprise for waste collection.
It also includes an environmental clean-up
promoter network to support the work of the
waste collection enterprise and at the same
time, promoters encourage a change of
attitude, knowledge and practices among
beneficiaries. In this component, regarding
to the topics of environmental clean-up, the
social mobilization of community leaders is
incorporated, so they pass on the learnings
to new students in schools.
Strengthening community organizations to
facilitate the creation of an organization
coordinator, in order to achieve more power
and alternatives for the well-being of the
community.
Promotion of formal education through the
upgrading and training of theachers that
work in neighborhood schools, improvement of
school facilities and equipment. It also
includes encouraging interest and the wish
to learn in students, through human
education model called”Growing Spaces”.
Employment generation through micro-credit
granting anf vocational education and
training. An important craft promotion
component has been added: design and
marketing.
