CIGAR FAMILY PLAN FOR COMPREHENSIVE AND
PARTICIPATIVE DEVELOPMENT IN RURAL
COMMUNITIES OF BONAO MUNICIPALITY, DOMINICAN
REPUBLIC.
The well-known Chateau de la Fuente is
located on the town Caribe, Bonao
municipality, where the wrapper of one of
the most famous cigars in the world is
grown, the Fuente Fuente Opus-X of
Tabacalera A. Fuente. Most of the success of
these cigars is attributed to the energy and
efforts put by members in this community and
the neighboring ones on growing the precious
tobacco. |
In recognition to the dedication of this
communities to its product, Fuente Family
and the Newman Family, their associates in
USA, decided to return this communities all
the richness received from the land and its
people, through the Cigar Family Charitable
Foundation; which promotes development
projects implementes by the Instituto
Dominicano de Desarrollo Integral, Inc (IDDI).
The member of the Cigar Family Charitable
Foundation describe IDDI as an institution
that lives by the Chinese proverb “Give a
man a fish and you will feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and you will feed him
for a lifetime”
This Plan has as its objective support the
comprehensive development of 23 rural
communities in Bonao nd it includes
activities such as:
Rural electrification, local roads, water,
environmental clean-up, pre-school and
primary education, primary health
assistance, organization support, income
generation/ employment, organic agriculture,
pisciculture, technical-vocational training,
art, dance, music…
The most outstanding
achievements are among others:
Greatest graduation
percentaje in the central region of the
country.
Reduction of at least
1% School Tardiness.
Lowest school
repetition rates in the central region of
the country.
Duplication of school
hours in comparison to other centers of the
central region of the country.
Improvement of general
grades in comparison to the initial
evaluation.
Lowest rates in the
regionof school dropouts.
Higher grades in the
evaluation of the Secretary of Education.
Election
of Girl Queen of the Bonao Children Carnival
2007.
First Place for the
Carnival Group 2008.
First and Secong Place
on the country central region’s spelling bee
contest.
Amateur Baseball
Trophy of Bonao Province.
Reduction of anemia
cases and child low weight.
100% cover to student
of the Center.
First and Secong Place
on the Provincial spelling bee contest.
Participation on the
finals of the Baseball Tournament Series.
In the last report of
UNDP regarding Human Develpoment, it
estimates 2.4 hours of daily classes in
Dominican Schools, in the case of the Cigar
Family School, this figure goes up to 6.5. |
